Loss is nothing new in the world of Destiny 2, where players have seen a number of well-known characters come and leave over the years. Now that certain fan favorites have said goodbye during the Defiance season, they can be viewed in the tower. Players can access a new monument that is discovered during the journey. The most recent season's story has garnered more favorable reviews than Lightfall's post-launch campaign. The Tower's most recent monument represents the love the gaming community has for the characters involved, even though it is unclear where the most recent loss will leave the remaining Vanguard. In the game, players can gather enough Destiny 2 Silver.
The story of Season of Defiance continues the events of Lightfall, depicting the war of the residents of the Last City against the Witness forces on Earth in their homeland. Destiny 2 mainstays Amanda Holliday, Devrim Kay, Mithrax, Crow, and Mara Sov lead the charge this season, as players in the EDZ and Cosmodrome work to repel The Witness' forces and rescue prisoners held by Shadow Legion. While the team's rescue effort was successful, Amanda Holliday also sacrificed her own life to ensure that Mithrax could free the prisoners from the Shadow Legion POW camp, which was about to self-destruct as a result of the rescue mission.
Amanda Holliday's departure hits both the Tower and Destiny 2 communities hard, as Vanguard's lead shipbuilder has been there since players first met her in the first Destiny. Following her death, players witness a small memorial service attended by Crow, Mara, and Zavala, made even more exciting by the loss of Zavala's voice actor, Lance Reddick. Regarding Holliday's departure, Reddit user DJToad was one of the first to share Bungie's own tribute to the late shipbuilder, placing Holliday where he could previously be found inside the tower's hanger.
Holliday's monument in the tower is similar to the one Bungie added for Cayde-6 in the main courtyard, next to the Ironwood tree, where players can advance to the next Guardian level after completing all quests for the current level. Cayde is memorialized as a bust of the head of the Exo hunter, while Holliday is remembered as a bust of the Arcadia-class Jumpship, as it was the "poster ship" of the series. The remaining area around the memorial has been covered with a tarp, indicating that no one else will occupy the space after Holliday's death.
While Memorial has been well-received by many players online, it remains to be seen how much Amanda Holliday's departure will hit other characters she was close to. Crow, in particular, was devastated by Holliday's sacrifice and made it clear at her memorial service that he intends to exact revenge on the Legion of Shadows with the player's help. As of this writing, Raven's wrath has not been seen or felt in the story, but there are many seasons left for Raven to accomplish his goal of revenge before Season of the Deep begins.
